How to get rid of soap scum

Soap scum!  We’ve all seen it before…

Soap scum is the solid white residue that clings to bathtubs, shower doors, sinks and it’s even inside your drains and pipes.

It forms when the minerals in the water react with the ingredients in the soap to form lime soap, which takes the appearance of soap scum around your shower or bath areas.

Not only is soap scum gross but did you know it can potentially be unhealthy harvesting unwanted bacteria, posing an even greater urgency to keep them clean.

Here are some easy ways to get rid of soap scum:

– Hot water: Boil hot water in a kettle and take out the stopper in your sink or shower and pour the hot water down the drain.  Run the tap on hot afterwards for a few more minutes allowing hot water to continually go down the drain.  The hot water and flowing action will help melt the soap scum inside the drain and allow it to flow down the drain.

– Baking soda: A home-made remedy to help eat up and break up soap scum.  Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda per 1 3L of water and use it as a cleaner on soap scum.  If this doesn’t work bump up the ratio to 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 1.5L water until it has eaten through the soap scum.  Not only does this get rid of soap scum but baking soda also deodorizes in addition to keeping your drains cleaner.

– Ammonia:  If hot water and baking soda doesn’t do the trick, pour ammonia down the drain followed by a kettle full of hot water and once again run hot water to flush the ammonia down the drain.  Make sure if this method is chosen to ensure there is good airflow in the room and open a window or add a fan as the odours may be overpowering.
