Common Toilet Plumbing Issues You Can Fix
The toilet is a common place for issues to occur as it is something you use every day. The last thing you want is to be stuck with a common issue that you don’t know how to fix. In this post, we’ll share some of the most common toilet issues and what you can do to fix them.
Issue 1: Running water in the toilet bowl
Sometimes called “phantom flush”, this is an issue where you may see or hear water in your toilet periodically running and cutting in and out by itself. This is usually caused by a leak in the flush tank. The culprit of this is commonly the flapper seat.
How to fix this? Drain your toilet tank and bowl, then check and clean the flapper seat. If you see that it is worn out or damaged, you may want to have it replaced.
Issue 2: Prolonged hissing sounds coming from your toilet
Do you hear a hissing sound coming from your toilet that won’t go away? This is probably due to water from the supply line trickling into the tank. To fix this, you’ll need to check your float, refill tube and the ballcock/inlet valve.
You want to see if your float is sticking or needs adjusting and make sure the refill tube isn’t too far inside the overflow tube.
Issue 3: Water in toilet bowl emptying slowly
A weak flush that is characterised by slow draining water that’s usually caused by small blockages of debris and items within the flush holes. You can easily fix this by getting a piece of wire and gently poking the holes until you clear our all items causing blockage.
Issue 4: Clogged toilet
Blockages and clogs are the worst. However, they can usually be easily fixed without sending a call to your plumber (at least, until you try these DIY solutions). Your first point of action is to grab a specialised toilet plunger. If this doesn’t work and the clog still sticks, try using a drain snake tool / toilet auger to unclog it.
