4 Ways to naturally clear your drains that are chemical free and inexpensive!

More often than not, a lot of us are looking for new and efficient ways to minimise our impact on the environment, and there are a few ways we can go about doing this. One of the most effective ways to reduce your carbon and environmental footprint is to reduce your use of toxic chemicals.

When it comes to unblocking drains, we unfortunately sometimes need to take extraordinary measures to unblock our pipes; however, there are a few weekly NATURAL and INEXPENSIVE tricks that you can do to help unblock your drains or keep them in tip-top shape.

  1. Hot Water

The cheapest and most effective way to keep your pipes clean is to run hot boiling water from your kettle down your pipes weekly. Hot water will help to breakdown wax’s, oils or fats that are lingering in your pipes! This is especially important to do to all kitchen, and shower drains, as a lot of our bathing products and kitchen products contain animal fats and oils.

Tip: Remember to pour the water slowly, this will help to melt away greases and gels.

  1. Plungers

A standard household tool, but if you don’t have one, you can usually pick one up for under $10. Plungers help to remove the little things that get stuck in our drains or pipes. They work by loosening any obstructions that get caught within the drains; things like cotton wool, hair etc.

  1. Baking Soda and Vinegar

These items are commonly found in our household cupboards and are one of the most effective ways to clear a blocked drain. So how does it work? Baking soda and vinegar create a chemical reaction that forms a foam/fizz; this reaction helps to create movement within your pipes, that then aids in alleviating any blockages by either manoeuvring blockages or bringing them up.

  1. Bent Coat Hanger

Sometimes your pipes need a little ‘push or pull’, and that’s all it will take to clear any blockages. It recommended that you do this weekly or monthly to help clear build-up of hair, gels, and oils. Bending a coat hanging in a U shape will allow you to pull up any obstructions that are caught I your drains. It is always recommended that you attempt to pull out any blockages rather than push them down; however, this isn’t still possible. If this is the case, it is better to consult a professional rather than cause more damage or further blockages to your pipes.

So, as you can see there a few things that you can do to keep your pipes clean and unblocked all year round. Adopting these four steps into your weekly cleaning program will minimise your need to get the professionals out to unblock your drains. More so, you will be doing your part to reduce your environmental impact, by reducing the number of chemicals that you use!

Your pipes will love you for it and so will the environment!
